In Kochi, the government has directed a compensation of Rs 25,000 to be given to a complainant named Sojish of Nettoor, in accordance with an order from the state human rights commission. The additional chief secretary of the home department issued this order. The compensation will be deducted from the salary of the accused former Sub-Inspector of Panangad, in three equal instalments. This directive came after Justice JB Kosi, the chairman of the commission, ordered the compensation. Sojish, a member of a scheduled caste, was assaulted by the former Panangad Sub-Inspector Vipin AB. The complaint stated that Sojish was taken into custody by a police team led by the former Panangad Sub-Inspector without the knowledge or consent of the authorities, while he was hospitalized. Sojish then lodged a complaint with the commission, which ordered a case to be filed against the Sub-Inspector and for compensation to be paid. Following an investigation, departmental action was taken against the Sub-Inspector with a reprimand, but no compensation was provided. The government found that the Sub-Inspector was given the opportunity to present a counter-argument before the commission issued its final order, but he failed to do so. Subsequently, the government instructed the payment of Rs 25,000 to the complainant, Sojish.
